Things took a turn for the worse for Fulton County DA Fani Willis, the DA behind the Trump mugshot, when one of the defendants in that case fired off a ground-shaking series of allegations about Willis using her position and resources to hire her lover and then profit off that relationship. In fact, Willis is now facing a Georgia Bar complaint over the allegations.
As background, the accusations came in a pleading filed by a lawyer for Michael Roman. Roman was a member of the 2020 Trump Campaign, serving as the director of Election Day operations for it, who faces charges, alongside 13 others, from Willis. He faces seven felony counts from Willis and has so far pleaded not guilty.
In the pleading, Roman’s legal team alleges that “the district attorney and the special prosecutor have violated laws regulating the use of public monies, suffer from irreparable conflicts of interest, and have violated their oaths of office under the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct and should be disqualified from prosecuting this matter.”
Because of the bombshell allegations in that pleading, DA Willis faces an argument from Roman that the charges should be dismissed, an argument from Rep. MTG that a criminal investigation into her should be conducted, oversight from Rep. Jim Jordan, and now a complaint with the Georgia Bar, which oversees and governs the legal community in Georgia.
Willis, defending her conduct and accusing her critics of being racists, said, “I’m a little confused. I appointed three special counselors. It’s my right to do, paid them all the same hourly rate. They only attack one. I hired one white woman, a good personal friend and a great lawyer, a superstar, I tell you. I hired one white man — brilliant — my friend and a great lawyer. And I hired one Black man, another superstar, a great friend and a great lawyer.
She continued, “The Black man I chose has been a judge for more than 10 years, run[s] a private practice more than 20 [years]. Represented businesses in civil litigation … served a prosecutor, a criminal defense lawyer, special assistant attorney general.” She then said, “How come, God, the same Black man I hired was acceptable when a Republican in another country hired him and paid him twice the rate?”
